Hand Scraped Hardwood Floor Installation | How To
How to Install Hand Scraped Hardwood Floors
Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor
Before you begin installing hand scraped hardwood floors, make sure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Remove any existing flooring, carpet, or debris.
Step 2: Acclimate the Hardwood
Allow the hand scraped hardwood planks to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours. This will prevent warping or shrinking after installation.
Step 3: Lay Vapor Barrier
Roll out a vapor barrier over the subfloor to protect the hardwood from moisture. Secure the edges with tape, ensuring complete coverage.
Step 4: Start with the First Row
Begin installation along the longest wall in the room. Leave a 1/2 inch gap between the wall and the first row of hardwood to allow for expansion. Use spacers to maintain an even gap.
Step 5: Install the Hardwood
Place the first plank against the spacers, tongue side facing the wall. Use a nail gun or flooring nailer to secure the plank to the subfloor. Repeat this process for the remaining planks in the first row.
Step 6: Continue with Subsequent Rows
For the second row and onwards, apply wood glue to the groove of each plank before connecting it to the previous row. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the planks together.
Step 7: Cut and Fit Planks
Measure and cut planks to fit around doorways, corners, and other obstacles. Use a miter saw or a jigsaw for precise cuts. Ensure a 1/2 inch gap is maintained between the planks and the walls.
Step 8: Complete the Final Row
Measure and cut the last row of planks to fit. Use a pry bar or pull bar to snugly fit the final row against the previous row. Secure the final row with a nail gun or flooring nailer.
Step 9: Install Baseboards and Trim
Once all the hardwood planks are installed, install baseboards and trim to cover the gaps between the flooring and the walls. Use a finish nailer to attach them securely.
Step 10: Clean and Enjoy
Remove any adhesive residue or debris from the floor. Give the floor a thorough cleaning and enjoy your newly installed hand scraped hardwood floors!
