Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor
Ensure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Remove any existing flooring and repair any damaged areas.
Step 2: Acclimate the Hardwood Flooring
Allow the hardwood flooring to acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours before installation.
Step 3: Install the Moisture Barrier
Lay a moisture barrier over the subfloor to protect the hardwood flooring from moisture. Secure it with tape.
Step 4: Install the Underlayment
If necessary, install an underlayment to provide additional cushioning and noise reduction. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.
Step 5: Measure and Cut the Hardwood Flooring
Measure the length and width of the room and cut the hardwood flooring accordingly. Leave a 1/2-inch gap around the perimeter of the room for expansion.
Step 6: Start Nailing Down the Flooring
Begin at one corner of the room and lay the first row of hardwood flooring. Use a nail gun or a hammer and nails to secure the flooring to the subfloor. Place nails approximately every 6-8 inches along the length of each board.
Step 7: Continue Installing the Flooring
Continue laying rows of hardwood flooring, ensuring each board is tightly connected to the previous one. Stagger the boards for a more visually appealing and stable installation.
Step 8: Cut and Fit the Last Row
Measure and cut the last row of hardwood flooring to fit against the wall. Use a pry bar or a pull bar to snugly fit the last row in place.
Step 9: Install Baseboards and Trim
Install baseboards and trim to cover the expansion gap and give the floor a finished look. Nail or glue them to the wall, not the floor.
Step 10: Clean and Enjoy
Remove any debris or sawdust from the floor and give it a good cleaning. Now you can enjoy your newly installed nail down hardwood floor!
