Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor
Make sure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Remove any existing flooring and repair any damaged areas.
Step 2: Lay the Moisture Barrier
Roll out the moisture barrier over the subfloor, overlapping the edges by a few inches. Secure it in place with tape.
Step 3: Install the Underlayment
If required, install the underlayment according to the manufacturer's instructions. This helps reduce noise and provides extra cushioning.
Step 4: Acclimate the Hardwood Flooring
Allow the hardwood flooring to acclimate in the installation area for at least 48 hours. This helps prevent warping or shrinking after installation.
Step 5: Start the Installation
Begin installing the hardwood flooring along the longest, straightest wall in the room. Leave a 1/2-inch gap between the flooring and the wall to allow for expansion.
Step 6: Nail or Staple the Flooring
Use a nailer or staple gun to secure the hardwood flooring to the subfloor. Place nails or staples every 6 to 8 inches along the boards, ensuring they are driven at a slight angle.
Step 7: Continue Installing the Flooring
Continue installing the hardwood flooring, using spacers to maintain a consistent gap between boards. Use a tapping block and hammer to fit the boards tightly together.
Step 8: Cut and Fit the Last Row
Measure and cut the last row of hardwood flooring to fit. Use a pry bar and hammer to carefully fit it into place.
Step 9: Secure the Last Row
Secure the last row of hardwood flooring by nailing or stapling it to the subfloor.
Step 10: Fill Nail Holes and Sand the Floor
Fill any nail holes with wood putty and sand the entire floor to create a smooth surface. Remove any dust before proceeding.
Step 11: Stain and Finish the Floor
Apply stain and finish to the hardwood floor according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow sufficient drying time between coats.
Step 12: Enjoy Your New Hardwood Floor
Once the finish is dry, move furniture back into the room and enjoy your beautiful new solid hardwood floor!
